John 1:15 NLT: “John (the Baptist) testified about Jesus when he shouted to the crowds: This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”
In Jesus’ day, it was widely believed that chronological priority meant superiority. But John the Baptist is telling everyone that the one who came after him is far greater than he. He’s explaining this exception to this widely-held belief. However, if you consider that Jesus existed at creation, then he actually SHOULD be greater than John, since he was here from the beginning.
All of this is to pin down just who Jesus is, to give hope to the world. It may seem obvious to us now that we know the whole story, now that we have a finished Bible in our hands.
2K years ago witnesses were still writing that book!
