For Friday, March 10, 2023:
Matthew 10:16 NLT, Jesus speaking: “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.”
Jesus was sending the 12 out to do what we’re all called to do – make disciples of all nations. The lesson here is that people who have grown accustomed to lies don’t really want to hear the truth! In spite of what they may tell you, no one really appreciates constructive criticism, pointing out what they’ve been doing wrong! So we have to be gentle!
Jesus’ instructions to us are to be as crafty as the snake in spreading the Good News, and to be as harmless as doves. Remember that kindness, mercy and forgiveness are Christian traits.
The early Christians, called ‘The Way,’ shared and cared for one another. That wasn’t typical behavior at the time. But people liked what they saw, and the group grew through attraction, not by forcing their beliefs on others.
Those who truly believed were unwavering in their commitment to Jesus and his teaching!
