Philippians 3:8a NLT, Paul speaking: “Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”
Paul is saying that a big house, a fancy car or a winning lottery ticket are worthless when compared to Jesus! Those things give us short-term pleasure here on earth, but Jesus can grant you eternal pleasure in the hereafter!
With these words, Paul puts a personal relationship with Jesus Christ at the very center of the Christian’s life. He joyfully accepted the loss of all other things for the greatness of this personal relationship. And Paul had lost a lot in his life, and suffered a great deal – he’s writing this letter from a Roman prison! Yet none of his circumstances matter, because he has confidence in the promises of Jesus!
After 20 years of ministry, Paul could take an objective look at the balance sheet and make a fair assessment of which things were most valuable.
