For Friday, June 16, 2023:
Philippians 3:8-9 NLT: “Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.”
Jesus coming to earth to redeem mankind represented a radical change in theology. Paul had been raised Jewish, studied with the Rabbi Gamaliel and was trained as a Pharisee. He knew all the commandments and did his best to obey everything. Now he’s telling us that none of that matters. He calls it all “garbage!” Friends, you can’t “earn” your way into heaven!
What matters most is becoming one with Jesus. Jesus is the source of our salvation, not anything that we can do. It’s a free gift given to those who place their faith, hope and trust with Jesus the Savior.
Paul is detailing, for the Philippians, the New Covenant, God’s revised plan for redeeming believers. God wants mankind to succeed, to return to him in his Kingdom. He wants us all to see heaven from the inside! God is good!
Jesus changed everything!
