For Tuesday, February 6, 2024:
Mark 10:21b NLT, Jesus speaking to the rich man: “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
A few more thoughts on the rich man and his money. Apparently he couldn’t let go of it to follow Jesus. But let’s think this through to its logical conclusion.
Remember the old saying, “You can’t take it with you?” If the rich man had been going to heaven (and I don’t think he was,) he couldn’t have brought money. And if he was joining Satan’s team, he still couldn’t have brought his riches. So what happened to the money that seemed so important to him at that time? Maybe his family inherited some of it. Maybe some of it went to Roman taxes. The truth is that we really don’t know. But what we DO know for certain is that upon the rich man’s demise, his contact with the money ceased.
Jesus wanted followers who were “all in.” This man’s insistence on hanging onto anything, especially this money, disqualified him from following Jesus.
The lesson for us is to not let our love of anything disqualify us from following Jesus.
